Anambra Welfare Association (AWA) was formed in 2001 by a few well-meaning indigenes from Anambra state in Nigeria, West Africa. People from Anambra are often referred to as ‘Anambraians’. One of such founding members was late Chief Mgbemena.

The association has many objectives some of which include:

  • To promote and uphold the Igbo traditions & cultures.
  • To provide a platform where children of members of the association are taught the Igbo language, traditions & culture.
  • To support members of the association particularly in relation to issues relating to their welfare amongst other objectives.

AWA is a voluntary and non-profit organisation with no affiliation to any religious or Political group. She has a mission to serve her local community by representing the interests of Anambra people with their families and friends, culturally, socially and economically.

As a dynamic, proactive and vibrant group, we encourage and support the people from Anambra State of Nigeria regardless of their age, marital status or economic circumstance.

To promote the Igbo language and culture among the children and young members of the association, AWA has different classes for children/ YP groups aged: 2 – 5years; 6- 12yrs; 13 – 17years and the young adults between 18 -25years of age. These classes are highly popular and are well attended.

Anambra Welfare Association supports education through its book sharing scheme.

Certificate of achievements and token gifts are given to students who progress from Primary to secondary schools as well as those who progress into universities/ other higher education or graduating.

In 2019, Dr and Dr (Mrs) Chuka demonstrated their strong support for education by establishing and funding the ‘Engineer C.C Chuka achievement award’ as an incentive for members children for members children who engage with the 11+ examination.

AWA is an association that puts the interest of its members at the heart of its activities, all year round we organise workshops, seminars and other events.

In accordance with the Igbo tradition, AWA organises visits to members in birth, bereavements or marriages etc.

We also support the disadvantaged in our community through our charity donation to worthy causes like Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation, Sickle Cell Research to mention a few. International we have supported organisations like Red Cross Society, Orphanages in Nigeria etc.

Although an independent organisation, AWA collaborates with other Nigerian Community groups particularly those of Igbo ethnic groups.
